From editor and copywriter to marketing and social media manager, Charyn Pfeuffer’s 16-year career in media and publishing has involved her in all aspects of engaging audiences and telling the perfect story.

Charyn made her editorial debut in the mid-1990s while running the Personals & Promotions department at the Philadelphia Weekly  with the dating advice column, “Ask Me Anything.” In this role, she managed a 10-page section of the newspaper, in addition to coordinating several singles’ events each week. A few years later, she shifted her attention from lonelyhearts to food, travel and lifestyle topics – a move that complemented her extensive front of the house restaurant experience.

Her work has appeared in more than 100 media outlets including AOL, Brides, Coastal Living, Condé Nast Digital Media (Hotelchatter.com, Jaunted.com, Jetsetter.com and Vegaschatter.com), The Costco Connection, DailyCandy.com, Destination Weddings & Honeymoons, Fodors.com, FoodandWine.com, Gayot.com, Health, Islands, Marie Claire, National Geographic Traveler, San Francisco Chronicle, Seattle Times, SPA, Sunset, TravelandLeisure.com, TravelChannel.com and Yahoo!  She has authored, co-authored and ghostwritten more than a dozen books.

As an early social media enthusiast, she’s most in awe of its power to create community and conversation. In 2009, Charyn was selected as a guest blogger for “Nine Bloggers in Paradise,” a promotion hosted by Marriott. She spent three days at CasaMagna Marriott Puerto Vallarta Resort & Spa blogging and tweeting the play-by-play of her tropical stay.

That same year, she used Kickstarter, an online funding platform for creative projects, to raise more than $20,000 in 90 days solely via Facebook and Twitter. She handed in her travel writer all-access pass, founded The Global Citizen Project, and for the next year volunteered with 12 community projects dotted around the globe. She tallied close to 1,000 hours of service and took friends and followers on a virtual “do good” trip, raising awareness, educating about the beauty of our world and giving people new perspectives.

Charyn’s volunteer efforts were recognized, and in 2010, she was the recipient of a $5,000 Voluntourism Grant from Travelocity’s Travel for Good® Program in WE TV’s First Annual WE Do Good Awards Contest, in partnership with Ladies’ Home Journal. She’s Wyndham Worldwide’s resident voluntourism expert and writes several women-friendly travel columns monthly for its Women on Their Way website.

Twice annually, Charyn co-instructs a course at Writers.com to help travel writers navigate the ever-changing landscape of new media. She’s also co-hosted Travelers’ Night In (#TNI), a popular weekly twitter chat for industry trade and media.

The Seattleite has spoken on behalf of United Way of King County to Social Media Club Seattle on how nonprofits can use social media for fundraising and volunteer outreach. She’s volunteered as a Social Media Team member for United Way of King County’s annual Community Resource Exchange, and currently volunteers her social media smarts for Check Your Boobies and Beats for Boobs.
